What is a notary?
A notary is an individual who has been appointed by the state to serve as an impartial witness to the signing of legal documents. What are the requirements to become a notary?
To become a notary, you must:
-Be at least 18 years of age
-Be a resident of North Carolina
-Complete an approved notary education course OR pass an examination administered by the North Carolina Secretary of State’s office
-Submit a notary application to the NC Secretary of State’s office
-Be sponsored by a licensed surety company
After you have met all the requirements and become a notary, you must then take an oath of office. The oath is usually taken in front of the county register of deeds, who will then issue you a notary commission. The commission is valid for four years from the date it is issued.
What are the duties of a notary?
A notary is primarily a witness to the signing of important documents. A notary’s signature on a document indicates that the notary witnessed the document’s signing and that the person who signed it did so willingly and under his or her own free will. A notary may also take statements from people, called depositions, and may administer oaths.
